26 024
26024 was purchased in September 1993 by the 6LDA Group, after withdrawal in September 1992 with traction motor defects. It was lying at Motherwell, reportedly with two burnt out traction motors. Some parts had also been removed. However, it had received an overhauled power unit and generator 12 months before being stopped, so was worth buying. However, as with 26004, problems arose with the specification for the asbestos removal, and BR Scientific's insisted on a far more in depth examination than what had originally been planned prior to the tender being issued. By this time, the sales had already been agreed, therefore BR had to stand the extra cost, which was further complicated when, in April 1994 , responsibility for the locos passed to Trainload Freight West. 024 eventually moved to MC Metals, Glasgow in September 1994 for the asbestos checks. Two months later, in November 1994, 26024 arrived at Bo’ness.

Both cabs had been completely stripped out, the former boiler room dismantled and the brake frame removed to give access to the bulkheads. It was decided to leave restoration of 024 until 004 was complete. It remained dumped in the yard at Bo’ness until September 1996, when it was decided to make a detailed assessment of what was missing and the work required. The power unit was examined and missing material refitted, and the control cubicle was rebuilt as all the copper busbars had been stolen. Efforts were then concentrated on 004 until Summer 1998, when shed space became available. Large areas of the cab structure were replaced at both ends, and the cantrail area was replated both sides due to corrosion. The cabs and bulkheads were also rebuilt and large amounts of copper pipe were made up to replace what had also been stolen. No.1 traction motor was replaced, as it was burnt out, the first time this task had been tackled at Bo’ness. No.4 wheelset was also removed and sent for tyre turning, as the diameter was out of tolerance with the others.

024 was invited to appear at the East Lancs diesel week in July 2000, but unfortunately could not be completed in time. It made its first run at the September 2000 SRPS diesel weekend in undercoat, and appeared fully restored at Polmadie open day two weeks later. It traveled south of the border for the first time in many years in August 2001, when it appeared at the Keighley and Worth Valley Railway diesel weekend with 25235 and 47643.In 2005,and following a repaint,"024" traveled to the North Yorkshire Moors Railway with 27 001 and 47 643 for their Spring Diesel Gala. In June 2006, the loco moved to Bury on the East Lancashire Railway to attend both July and september Gala weekends before retuning north at the end of September. When time permits the cab interiors will be completed. The loco is currently at the East lancashire Railway and will return to Bo'ness before Christmas
024 heads for Bo'ness. Pearson
